"Mackerel Road" was used long ago to bring mackerel taken at Wakasa Bay to the capital city of Kyoto. The old road goes deep into the Hira Mountains along the Ado River. The mountain village surrounded by nature is only half an hour's drive from the center of the town of Katata.



The 76-meter waterfall, the highest falls in the prefecture, is located on the mountain side of Hira Genkimura. The waterfall consists of three separate falls, Otaki (Male) and Metaki (Female) Falls and Yaken Falls.

Like Kojorogaike Pond, Meotodaki is a sightseeing spot on the popular Mt Horai hiking course. The way the two falls go straight down side by side, as their name suggests, is very beautiful.

Ogoto is well known as the place where a holy spring wells up, and according to legend it was opened by the Buddhist monk Saicho (Dengyo Daishi), founder of Hieizan Enryaku-ji Temple. The water is simple alkaline spring water. Besides the hot spring itself, the superb view and various tasty foods make Ogoto a popular health resort.




Hot spring bath facilities in a natural setting with views of the Hira Mountains. The visitors to Hiratopia include many climbers, who come to relieve their fatigue by climbing and hiking around Hira.

Biwako Hot Spring is quite close to Hamaotsu city center, and it attracts many people from the Kyoto, Osaka, and Kobe areas. The water is simple alkaline spring water.

As a temple town in front of Ishiyama-dera Temple, the town was well developed from olden times. In 1963 a hot spring was discovered, and since then many tourists from far away have been visiting. The spring water is a 14 C radium-containing cool mineral water.
